Have A Cracked Windshield? What You Need To Do (& Not Do!)

If you have a crack in your windshield, you need to make sure that you take the appropriate action to fix it. A cracked windshield can impact your ability to see the road and can degrade your car's structural integrity. If you have a cracked front glass, there are a few things you need to do and two significant things you need to avoid.

Don't Ignore the Crack

The worst thing you can do is ignore the crack. Ignoring the crack is not going to cause the crack to go away. In fact, the longer you ignore the crack, the more likely the crack is to grow and expand and lead to larger issues. As the crack gets larger, the glass will get weaker, and the likelihood that you will have to replace your entire windshield instead of just repair the crack increases.

Don't Try to Fix the Crack Yourself.

The second worst thing you can do is try to fix the crack on your own. While there are many do-it-yourself kits out there, if you attempt to fix your windshield on your own, you could mess up and create a bigger problem. As such, you would be liable for the damage done, as you were the one who undertook the repairs. Additionally, many of the do-it-yourself repair kits are designed to be temporary fixes until you get your front glass to a professional for repair or replacement; they are not designed to be a permanent solution.

Do Call Your Insurance Company

You should call up your insurance company and let them know that your windshield was damaged. Many insurance companies have policies in place where they will pay to repair or replace your windshield for free. You don't have to pay a deductible or anything to get your windshield fixed. Some insurance companies have started to offer free windshield repair because they recognize that having a working windshield reduces the risk of accidents and expensive claims they have to deal with.

Do Find a Mobile Repair Shop

Finally, find a mobile windshield repair shop in your area. Mobile repair shops make it much easier to get your windshield fixed. With a mobile repair shop, you don't have to take time out of your day to go to a physical repair shop. Instead, the mechanic can meet you at your house, work, or even when you are out shopping, and either repair or replace your windshield right there on the spot.

A mobile repair allows you not to have to interrupt your day to fix your windshield. This service often enables your vehicle to have adequate time to adjust and allow the adhesives used to fix or replace your windshield to cure before you get on the road again.

If you have a damaged windshield, contact your insurance company to see if they will pay for the repair or replacement, and then find a mobile windshield repair shop to do the work. Don't try to fix it yourself, and don't allow the crack to sit and worsen with time. Fix it right away so you have a clear view of the road and a safe vehicle to drive.
